All Things Self-Help

Hey Readers!

I want to create a post targeting those who may not necessarily need therapy, but are looking for some guidance and or self-help. Not everyone needs counseling believe it or not. Now, this is a loaded statement. I truly believe it would benefit everyone to have had some type of counseling in their life, even if it was a short term experience. But, I digress... Not everyone is needing intense therapy, but there are some people who enjoy reading a self-help book. In this post I am going to post some of my very favorite books and or devotions that I tend to reference with clients and or have used myself. I will indicate which recommendations are faith based. *

  1. The Body Keeps The Score- Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. : This is a phenomenal book for those who have experienced any type of trauma. It is very heady on scientific terms, but worth the read. *Disclaimer- If you have never sought out therapy for current or past abuse please schedule a counseling appointment. I would recommend this book to all trauma survivors.

  2. Dare to Lead- Brene Brown: This book is geared towards anyone in leadership. Brene spends time processing best strategies in maintaining healthy and effective leadership skills. She focuses much of her discussions on the importance of vulnerability.

  3. Restoring the Shattered Self- Heather Davediuk Gingrich- * Christian based book for practicing therapists. Heather focuses on faith based principals to help counselors guide clients through complex trauma.

  4. Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents- Lindsay C. Gibson- The primary focus of this book is to help individuals heal from distant, rejecting, or self-involved parents. I have had clients express how they felt understood after reading this book.

  5. The Forgiveness Journal- Lysa Terkeurst- *Christian based . *This journal is a guided journey that goes along with Lysa's book Forgiving What You Can't Forget. I have found that you do not have to read the book in order to walk through the journal, although I highly recommend both. The journal spends time bringing in biblical truth on the power of forgiveness. Lysa poses critial thinking questions for readers to respond to in their personal time.

  6. Ruth: Love, Loss, Legacy- Kelly Minter- *Bible Study.* This is a 7 session bible study, therefore it will take some time to complete. I highly recommend this bible study for anyone who has experienced grief or those seeking restoration. Kelly's bible study is also paired with weekly videos that go into further detail on the readings. This is a fun bible study to do with a group of gals! She has created a fun way of connecting by adding person recipes between each week. I am all for the food, so I was sold instantly!

  7. Discerning the Voice of God- Priscilla Shirer- *Bible Study* If hearing God is hard for you, know you are not alone. It is hard to know how God speaks to us, but in this bible study Priscilla takes us on a journey of understanding God's character and how he speaks to us. This 7 session study is also paired with video access.

That's all for now! I genuinely hope if you are in search of self-help material you can find these reads successful! Should you have any questions regarding a specific read, please feel free to shoot me a message via my website, I would love to chat further!

Till next time,

Olivia
