Faith Based Counseling

Updated: Jan 22, 2025

For those of you who are interested in how I incorporate Faith into session, this entry is for you. I'm not going to lie, If you would have told me 5 years ago that I would be opening a private practice and marketing myself as a Christian counselor, I would have laughed at you. Mainly because of fear and lack of confidence. Not in my counseling ability, but in my faith. For years, I have felt that I needed to be able to quote 100 + scriptures, know the bible inside and out in order to help people. The more I dig into my own faith, the more I am finding this is false. Please don't take this as me putting down Christians who love to memorize bible versus and who have a memory bank in their head full of bible stories. That is a wonderful ability! But, for me personally, I am not there yet, and that's okay.

There are 3 major ways I bring my faith into counseling sessions. Prayer, Books, Bible Studies/Devotions. Let me break these down. Prayer, not only do I offer to pray with my clients, I pray for them prior to session. I pray over the session and as that The Lord guide the way he see fit. PRAYER IS POWERFUL ladies and gents. Not sure if you are familiar with the song "When We Pray" by Turen Wells? Well if not, Youtube it right now as you read my blog. It is amazing and how I view prayer. Prayer changes, comforts, and heals. I would not be helping others and doing what I love to do if the Lord didn't answer my prayers. Books, please don't cringe as you read this... I promise I will not assign anyone homework, but books are amazing. I find for some, reading brings normalization and relief that what they are experiencing is not just happening to them. I love reading, so sometimes I will pop out a book in session, make a copy of a chapter or suggest a read. I have been digging into more Christian books lately and they are so powerful. Bible Study/Devotions, this is a big part of my walk with God. This is how I continue to learn and grow in my faith. There are times where my daily devotion or bible study reading lines up with my clients exact needs. It gives me goosebumps every time because that is GOD. Because of this, I am able to share my teachings with clients. I will sometimes suggest a bible study, or pull scripture/information from what I am learning and share.

It has been a journey for me to be where I am today. Especially with my confidence in identifying as a Christian counselor. I am not perfect, no one is. I do not expect perfection in therapy, that is unrealistic and will never happen. But, I am supportive, understanding and putting all my hope in Jesus Christ and if you struggle to trust my leadings then lets lean on him together, because I GIVE IT ALL TO GOD. Can I get an Amen!!!!!!? If you have any questions about certain topics and my approach please shoot me an email. I'd love to chat!
